[Leyendecker, Frank Xavier. (1877-1924)]attributed to. The Violinist (Study for 1905 Collier's Magazine Cover).

Original pastel on paper, apparently a study for his work featured on the cover of the January 1905 Collier's Magazine (The Merry Tune and the Sad Heart), attractively framed under reverse painted matting glass in gold tone frame.  Unsigned, unexamined out of frame, but in apparently fine condition. Visible image approximately 11 1/8 x 9 inches, 14 1/2 x 12 3/8 inches framed. Together with a fine copy of the magazine showing the final version.

A large format painting of this same subject by Leyendecker, probably made after the cover illustration, was sold at auction (Illustration House, 2002) but was likewise not identical to the published version.

Frank Xavier Leyendecker, AKA Frank James Leyendecker, was a German-American commercial artist and illustrator, and worked with his brother Joseph Christian Leyendecker first in Chicago, then later in New York City and New Rochelle, New York. He is best known for his magazine cover art for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Life, but also provided artwork for a large number of advertisers.
