Mingus, Charles. (1922–1979). "Mingus at Monterey - Signed LP "I'm told you are a Mingus fan...".

Signed Mingus at Monterey Double LP (Charles Mingus - JWS 001-2) with inscription to front of gatefold sleeve reading "I'm told you are an old Mingus fan - So Thank [sic] for listening Michall Cookenham - Best in Life to you. / Charles Mingus." Jacket with moderate ringwear and staining, some splitting to edges, else fine. LPs visually in apparently very fine condition.

Mingus, a virtuoso bassist and composer, is regarded as one of the most innovative jazz musicians in history. In addition to his own albums and concerts, he worked as a sideman with Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo. He was also a passionate campaigner for civil rights.

Recorded September 20, 1964, at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey, California, this is a rare original private pressing available through Mingus's short-lived mail-order Jazz Workshop label. Some parts of the inside lp surface are etched, as if corrected. They are as follows: Side 1B: the "89" of 5089; Side 2A : 5081 and the R; Side 2B : 5088.

The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow stated: "One of the highpoints of Charles Mingus's career was his appearance at the 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival... it showcases the bassist/composer/bandleader at the peak of his powers"
