Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Felix. (1809–1847). 1835 Program of Mendelssohn's Inaugural concert as conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra.

Erstes Abonnement-Concert im Saale des Gewandhauses. Sonntag, den 4ten. October 1835. A remarkable original program from the first performance of Mendelssohn as conductor of Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chorus, leading works by Beethoven (Fourth Symphony), Cherubini, Spohr, C. M. von Weber, and his own “Meeresstille und Glückliche Fahrt.” 4 pp. Tiny repair to central fold, overall in very fine condition.

Mendelssohn's inaugural concert as conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra; his appointment with the orchestra would prove to be a productive association which he would continue to enjoy until the end of his life, and one which allowed him to make significant contributions to German musical culture.

The first private performance of Meeresstille und Glückliche Fahrt ("Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture," Op. 27) was on September 8, 1828 at Mendelssohn’s home. The public premiere was at a benefit concert in Berlin on December 1, 1832 in the same venue where he conducted the revival of Bach’s Matthew Passion. After this performance the score was stolen. In 1834 Mendelssohn rewrote it and that is the only version we now have.
