Mahler, Gustav. (1860-1911). 1911 New York Concert Program conducting Beethoven 7.

Uncommon original 1911 program from a performance of Gustav Mahler conducting the Philharmonic Society which later became the New York Philharmonic. February 10, 1911. The program included three movements from "Romeo and Juliet" by Berlioz; selections from Wagner "Meistersinger" with Strauss's "Pilgrim's Morning Song"; and Beethoven's 7th Symphony. 2 trimmed pages mounted into one sheet measuring 3.4 x 9.4 inches; 8.25 x 23.5 cm overall. Original programs from Mahler's short New York tenure are highly uncommon.

The 1910-11 New York Philharmonic season was long and taxing and Mahler's programmes were often too demanding for popular tastes. He was taken ill shortly after the present program, at the concert on Feb. 21, 1911 and did not conduct the rest of the season.
