Leigh, Vivien. (1913-1967) & Fonteyn, Margot. (1919 - 1991) & Schwarzkopf, Elizabeth. (1915-2006)& Gingold, Hermione. (1897 - 1987) & Redgrave, Lynn. (1943 - 2010) & Lillie, Beatrice. (1894 - 1989) & Redman, Joyce. (1918 - 2012)
By Doris Langley Moore. Illustrated with Costumes from the Author's Collection photographed by Felix Fonteyn. Large 8vo. Blue cloth in dustjacket. (vii), 184pp., color frontispiece, list of illustrations with all names, index, including 108 plates and illustrations with extensive descriptions on facing pp., depicting female historic clothing during the period 1870 - 1930, as worn by prominent figures of the book's publication era. This remarkable copy has been signed by many of the figures on their respective, generally full-page, photograph portraits, including three times by Vivien Leigh (three separate signed photographs), twice by Hermione Gingold (1874..."Slightly before my time!"), twice by Margot Fonteyn, twice by Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, three times by Beatrice Lillie, and by Lynn Redgrave (childhood portrait) and Joyce Redman. Blue cloth with wear to upper and lower board edges and spine, in a very good dj with small tears to extremities, else fine.
The signed photographs of Leigh are the most notable and depict her in the sorts of nineteenth century fashions for which she was known in her celebrated Academy Award-winning "southern belle" roles: Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" (1939) and Blanche DuBois in the film version of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951), a role she had also played on stage in London's West End.
From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon’s stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News, Esplanade, Tommy’s Connection, The Mirror, Bay Windows and other publications.
