The composer's great opera based on symbolist Georges Rodenbach’s phantasmagoric novel Bruges-la-morte remains Korgold's most celebrated work. Composed when he was just 23, it was first performed on 4 December, 1920 and its tremendous success heralded Korngold as one of German opera's most promising talents.
