A check signed by the great American novelist, short story writer and journalist. Printed and manuscript document signed, oblong 8vo, New York City, December 23, 1936. 3 x 8 inches (7.6 x 20 cm).
This document is a bank check by the Liveright Publishing Corporation to Hemingway in the amount of $4.53 for royalties from the short story, "Three Day Blow" later published in the volume In Our Time (1924). On verso, he has endorsed the check over one of the two cancellation stamps and signed "Ernest Hemingway."
Hemingway's first work referred to here, In Our Time, is a collection of tales reflecting his youth. The royalty check was paid in January 1973, the year that his novel To Have and Have Not (1937) was published. A fine royalty check referring to his first book in the year of an important novel perhaps best remembered now in the film version.
