An intriguing collection of autograph manuscript instrumental parts for the majority of the large orchestra and band instruments in the Overture that set the stage for Garland's appearances in concert. In an unknown copyist hand, most parts titled "Garland Overture," and several of the parts labeled additionally "Judy Garland" at the head, likely indicating her personal ownership of the set. Parts include: Piano, 7 pp; Guitar, 4pp; Drums, 3pp, Violin A, 4 pp (plus second copy in facsimile); Violin B, 3 pp; Cello, 4 pp (ozalid copy, with annotations throughout in pencil); Bass, 3 pp; 1st Trumpet, 3 pp; 2nd Trumpet, 3 pp; 3rd Trumpet, 3 pp; 4th Trumpet, 3 pp; Trombone 1, 3 pp; 3rd Trombone, 3 pp; Horn, 2 pp; Flute, 2 pp; Reed 1, 4 pp; Reed 2, 4 pp; Reed 3, 4 pp; Reed 4, 4 pp; Reed 5, 4 pp. The parts, black ink on Hollywood Music Papers manuscript paper, are heavily annotated throughout in ink and pencil, with numerous cancelations, insertions, cue markings, etc. and consist of a musical medley of Garland's hits: The Trolley Song, Over The Rainbow and The Man That Got Away. Measures 12 x 14 inches (30.5 x 35.7 cm). Well-worn from use, overall fine.
The Garland Overture was, for a period, Garland's standard concert opener and may be heard as the first number on her first live concert album, Judy Garland at the Grove, recorded August 5, 1958 at the Coconut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, CA with Freddy Martin and his Orchestra. It is likely that the present parts were used, among many other times, for this historic performance.
