Original R. Ganz of Zürich cabinet photograph of the important Italian composer/pianist, shown in a three quarter bust portrait, signed and inscribed March, 1900 to the important music publishing house: "Gentlemen G. Schirmer (Sons) with friendly greetings."  Poor ink adhesion to parts of the inscription and somewhat low contrast signature, otherwise fine. 4.25 x 6.6 inches; 10.8 x 16.7 cm. One of the United States’ most venerable music publishing names, Gustave Schirmer established Gustave Schirmer Music Publishers in 1866. By the start of the 20th century, it was internationally renowned, not just for 18th and 19th century music but as a champion and publisher of contemporary works. Rudolph E. Schirmer (1859 - 1919) and his brother, Gustave, managed the business jointly at the time of the present inscription, and did so until Gustave's sudden death in 1907. Rudolf was a close friend of Mahler, Granados, and Busoni.
