[Massine, Léonide. (1896–1979)] Hoppé, Emil Otto. (1877–1972). Léonide Massine in “Pulcinella”, 1920.

Vintage photograph of the Russian dancer by the notable German-born English photographer Emil Otto Hoppé Copyright hand stamps by Hoppé to verso.  Some light nicks and scratches, two moderate creases and three pin holes, including one with small area of surface loss, otherwise in very good condition. 6 x 4.5 inches; 15.24 x 11.43 cm.

In 1920, Léonide Massine choreographed and danced the title role in Igor Stravinsky's ballet "Pulcinella", which premiered at the Paris Opéra on May 15th, with sets and costumes designed by Pablo Picasso. Here he is shown as the 16th century Italian commedia dell’arte stock character who always dressed in white, wore a black mask, and was best known for his long-beaklike nose (which is where his name, meaning little chick, derives).

German born photographer E. O. Hoppé moved to London in 1902 at the age of 24 to work for the Deutsche Bank. He was elected member of the Royal Photographic Society in 1903 and became one of the most important portrait and documentary photographers of his time. E. O. Hoppé spent most of his life in England or travelling the rest of the world on assignments. At a time when ballet was highly popular he photographed most of the leading members of Serge Diaghilev’s Russian Ballet in London and his "Studies from the Russian Ballet," was the photographer’s first major publication.
