Klemperer, Otto. (1885–1973). Signed Photograph. Signed 8 x 10 inch sepia De Bellis photograph the German-born conductor and composer. Though best known as one of the twentieth century’s greatest interpreters of the core German repertoire, he also premiered important works by the likes of Janácek, Stravinsky, and Schönberg. With a lengthy inscription dated L.A. Sept. 23, 1941. Small tears to margins, a number of creases both large and small, mounting remnants on verso. Nevertheless, a boldly signed and inscribed example, especially rare in signed photographs from this period.

In 1939, after completing the summer season with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Klemperer was diagnosed with a brain tumor and the subsequent surgery to remove it, left him partially paralyzed. The shaky writing on the present example is due to this.
