"In Lontano, as in Atmosphères, Ligeti made his music of long, slow gestures, but there was another basic element in his world, that of rapid mechanical activity. (‘Clocks and clouds’ he would call these two kinds of music in the title of a later work, borrowing a phrase from an essay by Karl Popper.)... in Ramifications (1968–9) he produced a work for two bodies of strings playing similar music in different tuning systems, a quarter-tone apart." (Paul Griffiths, New Grove Online.)
