Rachmaninoff, Sergei. (1873–1943). Signed Photograph, inscribed to New York College of Music. A striking early 8 x 10 inch original Mandelkern photograph of the composer seated with his head resting on his hand and looking intensely out from the image. Signed and inscribed in ink “New York College / of Music / With sincerest wishes / for your future success / Sergei Rachmaninoff, New York / 7 Februar. 1910.” Cracks at lower left and upper right, not affecting the signature or inscription and extending into the image only at upper right, moderate dampstaining around edges, else fine. Archivally matted and highly presentable in spite of the faults.
The New York College of Music was the oldest conservatory of music in New York City. In 1968, it merged with the Steinhardt Department of Music at NYU. Rachmaninoff signed the present photograph to the school while on tour in the U.S. in the winter of 1910. He had performed his recently composed Third Piano Concerto just a few weeks earlier, in January 16th, with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Gustav Mahler.
