Godowsky was one of the most highly regarded performers of his day. Born to Jewish parents Anna and Maciej Godowsky in Zosle, which is now part of Lithuania but was Russian territory when Godowsky was born, he was composing music by age 5 and showed emerging proficiency at piano and violin. He was largely self-taught, and began concert performances at age 9. He moved to the United States and performed in Boston in 1884.
