Rare 1876 medal honoring Cristofori, the Italian maker of musical instruments, generally regarded as the inventor of the piano. Recto featuring a high relief memorial scene, a lion holding the Florentine "gilgio" symbolic shield in front of the Duomo, with two laureled figures unveiling and inscribing a panel reading "BARTHOLOMAEUS / CHRISTOPHORIS PATAV. / INVENTOR / FAC: MDCCXI." The outer recto rim inscribed: "CONFORTA LA MEMORIA CHE GIACE," and with the date of MDCCCCLXXVI inscribed above. The verso incsied with a laurel wreath and the text: "A / BARTOLOMEO CRISTOFORI / CEMBALARO DA PADOVA / CHE / IN FIRENZE / NELL' ANNO MDCCXI / INVENTO / IL CLAVICEMBALO COL PIANO E FORTE / IL COMITATO FIORENTINO / COOPERANTI / ITALIANI E STRANIERI."
