Malibran, Maria. (1808-1836) . Two Song Manuscripts. Two 19th century manuscripts in an unidentified hand of two songs by the great soprano, also admired as a composer. Both on laid paper, with moderate toning and wear around edges, but otherwise fine. One of the songs is apparently unpublished.
[Je fus heureux avant de te connaitre] Tyrolienne. Musique de Mme. Malibran. 1 page, oblong folio (25 x 26.5 cm). Marked "Andantino" for 2 Voices and Piano. Pougin, p. 273 (incorrectly listed as a Nocturne). Worldcat lists 1 copy of the score, with the text by Loraux de Ronsière, published by Pacini in 1829.
L'Oubli. Romance de Mme. Malibran ["Il a passé désous ma fenetre"]. 1 page, oblong folio (25 x 26.5 cm). For Voice and Piano. Apparently unpublished, not listed by Pougin or in any edition in Worldcat.
The great soprano was widely admired as a composer and Berlioz praised her songs as "delicious," "well-written," "vigorous," and "truly dramatic," in an 1837 appreciation of Malibran in the Revue et Gazette Musicale. In a letter of 1832, Gioacchino Rossini wittily addressed Malibran as the "celebrated composer, singer, dressmaker, florist, painter, actress, dancer." Several of Malibran's works were published by Rossini's Parisian editor, Antonio Pacini and Troupenas also issued a number of songs and duets during Malibran's lifetime.
