Puccini, Giacomo. (1858–1924). Autograph Musical Quotation, "La Fanciulla del West." . A boldly penned large AMQS, one bar from his "La Fanciulla del West" based on the play "The Girl of the Golden West" by Belasco (1907). Signed in full, "Giacomo Puccini," and dated "Feb. 1911, Milano." 13 x 17 cm. Small tear slightly affecting the word "West," otherwise fine.


"La fanciulla del West" was commissioned by, and first performed at, the Metropolitan Opera in New York on December 10, 1910 with Met stars Enrico Caruso and Emmy Destinn for whom Puccini created the leading roles of Dick Johnson and Minnie. This was the first world premiere of an opera at the Met. The present AMQS, from just 2 months after the premiere, predates the first Italian performance which did not occur until June of 1911, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
