Varèse, Edgard. (1883-1965) [Becker, John J. (1886 - 1961)]. Autograph Letter to Becker. An interesting letter, neatly penned in his meticulous script, on a card postmarked March 13, 1948. Addressed to the composer, John J. Becker (1886 - 1961). In full: "Dear John, Thanks for score arrived today - Glanced through it and think it must come out fine - and sound effectively. Hope you are by now in good health totally recovered. I trust by lectures will be in shape in a month or so - and then to be able to plunge in my own work again. Will write you when I get the record. Till then, Cordially Edgard Varese." Addressed and signed additionally on the verso. In very fine condition.

Varese's papers are nearly all at the Paul Sacher Stiftung and autograph material such as the present letter is uncommon.

John J. Becker was one of the "American Five" of avant-garde music (Ives, Ruggles, Cowell, Riegger, Becker). "Over several decades he served as the group’s militant crusader for new music in the American Midwest, seeking to establish a national music with experimental tendencies drawn from the American experience rather than from Europe."
