Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886). Original 1824 Program from First London Concert. Remarkable concert programme for 'Master Liszt's Concert, June 21, 1824' at the Argyll Rooms, London. Printed on cream card, 124 x 90 mm. His first public concert in London, aged 12. Exceedingly rare, likely the only preserved copy of this historic document and the one used to illustrate the Liszt article in NewGrove (2001), vol. 14, p. 757.

Liszt and his father had arrived in London in early May, accompanied by Pierre Erard with one of his new pianos. Although this concert "clashed with one being given by the great Giuditta Pasta, it was well attended. Many pianists were there, including Clementi, Cramer, Ries, Kalkbrenner, Cipriani Potter, and other visitors to London, curious to observe the boy wonder and to hear Erard's new piano for themselves. Sir George Smart conducted the orchestra, and, as so often before, the chief work was Hummel's B-minor Concerto" (Alan Walker, Franz Liszt, p. 103). The final item in the programme was an 'Extemporary Fantasia' on a theme suggested by a member of the audience, and he improvised a fugue on Rossini's 'Zitti, zitti'. Among the singers were Braham, Catherine Stephens and Manuel Garcia.
