Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. (1756–1791). Ave Verum Corpus. Inno a quattro voci con accompagnamento di Organo.. Autograph manuscript, apparently in the hand of the copyist "Bovieri" who has signed at the lower right corner of the title page. Early 19th century. Oblong folio, hand-drawn staff paper. Full score, 6 systems on 3 pages; parts, each 1 page: soprano, alto, tenore [lacking bass]. Scattered foxing, soiling, overall fine.



Mozart's setting of Ave verum corpus in D major (K. 618) was composed to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi. Penned 6 months before his death, while in the middle of composing Die Zauberflöte, and while visiting his wife Constanze, who was pregnant with their sixth child and staying in a spa near Baden, the autograph is dated 17 June 1791. The motet foreshadows "aspects of the Requiem such as declamatory gesture, textures, and integration of forward- and backward-looking stylistic elements." (Christoph Wolff: "Mozart's Requiem," p. 33)
