Liszt, Franz. (1811–1886). Original 1825 Program of the young "Master Liszt.". An extremely rare original program from an early performance by the very young "Celebrated Master Liszt." Theatre Royal, Manchester on June 20, 1825. The principal attraction of the concert was the young Franz Liszt, in this, the second of two concerts he gave in Manchester in 1825 ( the first was on June 16th). These concerts were sponsored by the piano manufacturers Erard. 6 x 8.5 inches.

The remarkable lengthy program from his second sojourn to Manchester included a performance by Liszt of an "Air, with Grand Variations by Herz......on the Grand Piano Forte" and stated that he "will likewise perform an EXTEMPORE FANTASIA, and respectfully request Two Written Themes from any of the Audience, upon which he will play his Variations." Liszt then took part in a Grand Quintette by Ries. The concert began with "A New Grand Overture, Composed by the Celebrated Master Liszt...performed (for the First Time in Public) by the Full Orchestra." [For an interesting discussion of this work, "Don Sanche," see Alan Walker "Liszt" Vol 1, p. 115] The bottom third of the flyer/handbill gives the Principal Performers, among them "MASTER LISZT, (only Twelve Years of age), allowed to be the greatest Piano Forte Player of the present day."

A rare survival from the one of the earliest public performances by the influential pianist and composer. Creases and ragged edge to the left, slightly trimmed on the right edge, the heading "Second Grand Concert" clipped from a different sheet and affixed at head, corners with mounting remnants and tears, "D.W. Banks" written in brown ink in a contemporary hand beside "Master Banks".
