In the month of this autograph, Schoenberg arrived in Berlin with his pupils Roberto Gerhard, Winifried Zillig and Josef Rufer in order to take up his post as Director of a Master Class in Composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts. In that capacity, he replaced Ferruccio Busoni, who had held the post until his death in 1924. Schoenberg remained in Berlin until the rise of Hitler in 1933 when he was dismissed and forced into exile.
