Amalie Joachim, wife of violinist Joseph Joachim until 1884, was one of the leading oratorio and lied singers of the 19th century, and important interpreter of the songs of Robert and Clara Schumann and of her close friend, Johannes Brahms.

Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, one of his supreme masterpieces, was published well after the composer's death, in the wake of the famous performance by Mendelssohn on 11 March 1829, the most important event in the Bach revival of the nineteenth century.
