Szymanowski, Karol. (1882 - 1937). Rare Autograph Musical Quotation, "Symphonie Concertante.". A boldly penned and very rare AMQS from the important Polish composer. The quotation is from his Symphonie Concertante, Op. 60 which is also known as his Symphony No. 4. On a small album page, mounted to a larger sheet, overall 9.5 X 13 cm.
A work which straddles the concerto and symphonic traditions, Szymanowski wrote during its composition in a letter to Zofia Kochanska: "It is with the greatest ease and willingness that I have been working on this Concerto (again, please make it an absolute secret that it is a concerto - you may say it is the Fourth Symphony) and anyway I feel it is going to be a first-clas thing." (Letters, vol. IV: 1932-1937, part 1, p. 146)
Though dedicated to the composer's friend, the great pianist Artur Rubinstein, Symphony No. 4 was first performed by the composer himself - an amateur pianist - with the Poznan City Orchestra under Gregorz Fitelberg in Poznan on October 9th, 1932. In another letter to Kochanska, the composer reported "my piano 'debut' with Concerto in Poznan, 9 Oct. You can imagine what an évenement it was for me! Everything went superbly, so much so that I had to encore the entire finale! Do not laugh at me - I myself mock my 'pianist,' but take my word for it: people were raking their brains how come I played like that." (Letters, Vol. IV: 1932 - 1937, part 1, p. 326-327.)
