Printed caricature postcard of the Moravian-born tenor in a large hat (Steinhauser, Pilsen), with a difficult to decipher autograph message signed "Slezak" to verso, to "Ulik" [?], dated 5.II.26 and posted in Vienna with a 10-groschen stamp. In part (translated from the German): "Beloved, dear Ulik – that was an epistle [?] ... with loving greetings. Most cordially, Slezak." With added greetings in violet ink by two guests, including "Es war sehr nett bei Leo" [It was very nice at Leo’s] and "Kuss Annerl." Light soiling, corners rubbed. 3.5 x 5.5 inches; 9 x 14 cm.
Slezak was the leading heroic tenor of the Vienna Hofoper for nearly three decades, a celebrated Otello and Lohengrin, and later a much-loved comic actor in German films; his humorous memoirs were bestsellers.
Original German (in part): "Geliebter [?] herziger [?] Ulik – das war eine Epistel [?], die zwar ... / ... [illegible] lieben Grüßen. Herzlichst [?] / Slezak."
