ALS from the German composer, signing as Generalmusikdirektor, to Albert Dessoff of Frankfurt, declining to perform his Ballet Suite and proposing a full concert programme. Meiningen, 25. Nov. 1913; 4 pp. In full (translated from the German): "Dear Sir! / Forgive me for being able to answer your letter only today. / It is impossible for me to do the Ballet Suite at the concert on 23 January. I do, however, agree that you leave the Ballet Suite to Mr W. Reinhart [?] for performance. You wish that Bruckner’s Symphony (D minor) No. 3 be played as the close of the programme. / I agree to this, but I must point out to you that this symphony is very long. I would now like to propose the following programme: / 1) Oberon Overture – Weber / 2) Siegfried Idyll – R. Wagner / 3) Symphony in D major – Mozart, Allegro con spirito; Andante; Menuetto; Presto / 4) 3rd Symphony (D minor) – A. Bruckner. / I most urgently ask you to accept this programme. I also ask you to write to me very soon at Meiningen, Marienstraße 6 I, whether you agree with this programme; I also ask you, in your reply, to copy out the programme for me exactly [?]. / I do not know the individual movements of the Bruckner symphony by heart; Mr Kr[?]hlamb [?] (Frankfurt a/Main) can certainly tell you them. / I once again most urgently ask you to accept the programme I have proposed, to write to me at Meiningen as soon as possible, and to copy out the programme for me. / With the most excellent respect / Your / Generalmusikdirektor / Dr Max Reger." Together with the original registered envelope, addressed in Reger's hand to "Herrn Albert Dessoff / Frankfurt a/Main / 137 Grüneburgweg," with his return address "Prof. Reger / Meiningen / Marienstr. 6 I" to verso, five Germania stamps, Leipzig registration label and postmarks of 26.11.13, and Frankfurt arrival postmark of 27.11.13. Folds, light toning. Letter 7 x 4.25 inches; 17.5 x 11 cm. Envelope 4.75 x 3.5 inches; 12 x 9 cm.
Reger was Hofkapellmeister of the famous Meiningen court orchestra from 1911 to 1914. The Ballet Suite is his Eine Ballettsuite, Op. 130 (1913); the Mozart symphony, by its movements, possibly the "Haffner," K. 385. The recipient was probably the Frankfurt librarian and art historian Albert Dessoff (1865–1924).
Original German: "Sehr geehrter Herr! / Verzeihen Sie, wenn ich Ihren Brief erst heute beantworten kann. / Die Ballet-Suite kann ich im Concert am 23. Januar unmöglich machen. Bruckner's Symphonie (Dmoll) No 3 gespielt wird. / Ich bin damit einverstanden, doch muß ich Sie aufmerksam machen, daß diese Symphonie sehr lang ist.
