[Postal History]. Envelope Posted on the Dieppe–Serqueux Railway to Reading, Berkshire, 1897.

Small envelope addressed in ink to "[…]n / [Qu]eens Road / Reading / Berks," franked with a French 25-centime Sage type stamp, cancelled twice with the octagonal railway datestamp "Dieppe à Serqueux / 23 Mai 97." No contents; sender unidentified. Left edge torn away with loss to the beginning of each line, a large stain across the upper part, soiled. 3.25 x 2.25 inches; 8 x 6 cm.

This envelope was included in a large, important autograph collection we recently acquired. Unfortunately, we have not been able to identify a natural correspondence with anything in the collection. The collector did have autograph envelopes, likewise offered in this catalogue, from the likes of Giuseppe Verdi and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and we feel it likely that this writing here is likewise from a well-known figure in literature or music history. Unfortunately, there is no annotation on the item, and the letter that once went with it is no longer present. We are offering it here as a bit of postal history and would be delighted if someone recognizes the writing and snaps it up at this very special price!
