Duhamel, Georges. (1884–1966) [Peillard, Léonce. (1898–1996)]. "My wife read it to me aloud to spare my ailing eyes" - Autograph Letter Signed.

ALS from the French novelist to the maritime writer Léonce Peillard, about Biblio and his books Françoise and Magellan. La Nouvelle Maison, Valmondois, 21 August 1949; 1 p., on letterhead. In full (translated from the French): "Dear Sir, on my return from Brittany I find the copies of Biblio that you were kind enough to send me. The issue seems to me most welcome. I hope it will be of service to the curious, to men of letters, to amateurs. Many thanks! / I am told that you are sending me some fifty notebooks containing only what interests me. They will be most welcome. Thanks again! / We have read Françoise, which is a good story, well told, nourished by experience and by that kind of knowledge which documentation cannot replace. We are finishing Magellan, which means that my wife has read it to me aloud to spare my ailing eyes. It is a remarkable book which enlightens us on history, on geography, and on that life of the sea which you know so well. / I wish you good work and good rest and send you a most cordial remembrance, with all my heart, / G Duhamel / P.S. I do not quite understand, geographically, the stranding and the return of Magellan, p. 42 and following." Folds, toned, a tear with small loss at the right edge touching line endings, edges chipped. 10.5 x 8.25 inches; 26.5 x 21 cm.

Duhamel, physician, novelist (Chronique des Pasquier) and member of the Académie française, was married to the actress Blanche Albane. Léonce Peillard published Françoise, roman maritime (1945) and Magellan mon maître (1948), and later many works of naval history; Biblio was Hachette's bibliographical review.
