Burroughs, William S. (1914–1997) [Gysin, Brion. (1916–1986)]. Original Photograph by Brion Gysin, Annotated by Burroughs, with Autograph Envelope.

Original photograph of the novelist by Brion Gysin, annotated on the verso by Burroughs, "Picture by Brion Gysn" [sic], stamped "archives," and with a typed note from the photographer to verso: "Please return when through with this – hope it helps…" Edges with hole punches, a few creases. Together with an envelope addressed in Burroughs's hand from London to Gysin in Paris, postmarked 16 April 1973, returning the photograph.

Brion Gysin was a British-Canadian painter, writer, sound poet and performance artist, best known for the cut-up technique he developed alongside his close friend Burroughs. With the engineer Ian Sommerville he invented the Dreamachine, a flicker device designed to be viewed with the eyes closed, though he devoted his greatest efforts to painting and drawing, in calligraphic works inspired by Japanese "grass" script and Arabic script. Burroughs later said that Gysin was the only man he ever respected.
