Thalberg, Sigismond. (1812–1871). Autograph Musical Quotation Signed, New York, 1857.

Autograph musical quotation of four chords, signed "S. Thalberg," from the composer and one of the most distinguished virtuoso pianists of the 19th century, dated New York, March 12th, 1857, during his celebrated American concert tour of 1856–58. In very fine condition with a small bit of mounting remnants on the verso. 8 x 5 inches; 20 x 12.5 cm.

Grove notes that Thalberg, "together with Liszt, must be ranked as the greatest virtuoso pianist of the mid-19th century." Two decades after his triumphs in Paris that included a celebrated showdown with Liszt, which resulted in a draw, his reputation and music had been well-known for some time. During his two-year tour of the United States, he lavished NY City with eighty appearances, presenting a wider array of his repertoire there than anywhere else in the country.
