Every well-turned-out gentleman of a certain era carried a pocket knife, and the more fastidious among them carried one dressed for dinner. This slim folding knife wears gold scales engine-turned in a fine diamond pattern that catches the light from every angle, with a steel blade that tucks neatly away and a pivoting ring at one end so it can ride on a watch chain alongside the fob and the seal.
Watch-chain knives were the Swiss Army knives of the drawing room: for trimming a cigar, slitting open the morning post, cleaning a pipe, or peeling an apple with some ceremony. Today it hangs just as happily from a chain around the neck, and is sharp-looking in both senses of the word.
