The front has a soft, bloomed matte finish that sets off the chased leaves; the back is plain and polished, and inside are two oval compartments ready for portraits or a lock of hair.
Victorian jewelers loved the bloomed finish, a surface treatment that leaves a granular skin of purer gold, which is why the front tests at 18k while the body tests at 14k. The blank cartouche at the center of the wreath was left for a monogram and is still waiting for one.
