Kreisler, Fritz. (1875–1962) [Rachmaninoff, Sergei. (1873–1943)]. "Liebeslied" - SIGNED MUSICAL SCORE TO RAYMOND TURNER. New York: Carl Fischer. 1923.

Uncommon signed sheet music from the beloved American violinist and composer of Austrian birth who was one of the most important musicians of the last century. Rachmaninoff's piano transcription of Kreisler’s graceful and ever-popular Liebeslied, boldly inscribed and signed on the front cover to the noted American pianist Raymond Turner, "To Raymond Turner in kind remembrance of Fritz Kreisler June 1926," with his wife Harriet also adding her signature. Upright folio. 9 1/8 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm). Title; 2-11 pp. [PN] 22712-10. Light toning to covers with small tears around edges, spine separated and repaired with archival tape, else fine. Signed sheet music of Kreisler is considerably less common than signed photographs. This is only one of a handful of examples we've encountered.

The recipient was Raymond Turner (1903 - 1976), American pianist, session musician and recording artist. Although he is primarily remembered for the classical, novelty, children's and honky tonk recordings he made in the 1940s and 1950s, Turner's primary career was as a studio session musician in the golden era of Hollywood film, including a two-decade tenure as the staff pianist for Paramount Studios from 1927 to the late 1940s. A prominent jazz pianist in the 1920s, he spent two-years as the pianist in the renowned Paul Whiteman Orchestra from 1925 to 1927, participating in the group's tours of Europe and the U.S. at the time of the present inscription.

Fritz Kreisler's "Liebesleid" (Love's Sorrow) was originally part of his "Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen" (Old Viennese Dances). A piano roll recording of Rachmaninoff playing the present transcription of the work may be heard here
