Baryshnikov, Mikhail. (b. 1948) [Troyanovsky, Lia.]. Original Photograph in NYCB Production of "Prodigal Son," 1978.
Striking original photograph of the great dancer and choreographer as seen performing the title role in George Balanchine's The Prodigal Son with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) in November, 1978, a highlight of his brief tenure with the company. His performance was marked by a "vulnerable" yet "powerful" interpretation, with critics highlighting his dramatic acting and raw emotional intensity in the 1929 masterpiece. Signed, titled and dated on the verso by the photographer, Lia Troyanovsky. Very fine. 8 x 10 inches.
Born in Riga, Baryshnikov had a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad before defecting to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in western dance. After freelancing with many companies, he joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer to learn George Balanchine's style of movement. He then danced with the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director. Baryshnikov has spearheaded many of his own artistic projects and has been associated in particular with promoting modern dance, premiering dozens of new works, including many of his own.
