Recto featuring a pastoral scene of five elegantly attired figures in front of a chateau, one playing a musette at left; verso featuring a seated male violinist and a standing female figure holding an open scroll of sheet music. A number of tears and losses but eminently presentable. Unidentified early collection number 2180 in ink lower left verso.  10.5 inches (26.5 cm) in length. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e18th century fans have a sense of authenticity to them because they often depict contemporaneous life. The depiction of the costumes is detailed, and overall quality of the painting is refined, with a nuanced color palette, features notable in this example. In the 19th century, good copies were made, and are sometimes difficult to distinguish. One interesting way to identify the 18th century fans, though, is by the color of the hair, which appears powdered gray rather than a natural color, which was the authentic style of the time, a nuance that the Victorians did not adopt in their copies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe musette is a form of small bagpipe with bellows that was played in France in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
