Nicholson, Jack. (b. 1937). "Tokyo Was Fun" Autograph Poem to Harry Dean Stanton.

Highly amusing and unusual autograph signed postcard from the influential American actor and filmmaker to fellow actor, Harry Dean Stanton. The front of the postcard contains an image for the 34th International Berlin Film Festival in 1984 and Nicholson has inscribed a rhyming poem to the verso reading, "HDS- / Tokyo was fun- / Berlin had no sun- / Rome had some rain- / London press LIES again- / Your Pal / Jack." Measures 4.25 x 6 inches (11 x 15 cm). Very fine, a remarkable item from the year in which Nicholson won his second Oscar, as best supporting actor in Terms of Endearment

In the 1960s the two actors first arrived on the film scene in the most significant way, with Stanton appearing in Cool Hand Luke and Nicholson in Easy Rider. The two became close friends, sharing a house, and Stanton serving as Nicholson’s best man at his wedding in 1962.  “It was mostly good,” Stanton told Uncut of the pair’s time living together. “Jack is a very strong-minded person. Nothing was really bad, actually. We’re still very close friends. He gave me this advice in Ride In The Whirlwind [1966]: he said, ‘Harry, I want you to do this part, but I don’t want you to do anything. Let the wardrobe do the character; just play yourself.’” The advice ended up playing a central part in how Stanton viewed his professional life, and Nicholson’s words became “the beginning of my whole approach to acting.”
