Hofmann was a famed piano virtuoso, born in Poland, but raised in Berlin to encourage his musical career. Hofmann toured across Europe and culminated his concert tour in America between 1887 and 1888. Hofmann moved permanently to the US in 1926, after the outbreak of World War I. During his time in America, Hofmann became the first head of the piano department of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and later the director of the Insitute in 1927 and remained so until 1938.
