Striking large signed doubleweight bust portrait photograph of the great conductor, known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony. He has signed boldly and inscribed the photograph -- perhaps surprisingly! -- to his wife, Doris Hodgkins Monteux: "To my lovely wife, to whom I owe my life and my love / Pierre."  Stamped on the verso by Akira Tanno, Tokyo, Japan, 1963. In very fine condition. 9.5 x 11.75 inches (24 x 29.5 cm). From the estate of Monteux's daughter, Nancie Monteux Barendse, this is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable signed photographs of the conductor we have encountered.

Pierre and Doris Monteux met in 1922, during Monteux's time with the BSO. Though he was married (to his second wife, Germaine) and she had two children from a previous marriage, their attraction was immediate. They became a couple, although they could not marry until Germaine granted Monteux a divorce, and Monteux legally adopted Doris' children. They remained devoted to each other for the rest of their lives, frequently travelling together and together founding the Pierre Monteux School for conductors in Doris' native Maine.
