Thiebaud, Wayne. (1920-2021) & Bates, Katharine Lee. (1859-1929). "O Beautiful for Spacious Skies" - Signed and Inscribed. San Francisco: Chronicle Books. 1994.

Hardcover. Folio. 32 pp. Illustrated boards, yellow and white lettering to spine. Signed and inscribed by the illustrator to the front free endpaper: "For Patty / Thiebaud." A fine, signed copy of this beautifully illustrated edition of Katharine Lee Bates's classic poem. Dust jacket nearly perfect, with minor creasing to edges; book fine.

Best known for his luscious paintings of pies, ice-cream cones and gumball machines, California artist Wayne Thiebaud was an avid and prolific draftsman from the beginning of his career as an illustrator and cartoonist. Associated with Pop art because of his interest in objects of mass culture, he endows even the most banal, everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia. His early works, executed during the fifties and sixties, slightly predate those of the classic Pop artists like Warhol, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, suggesting that Thiebaud may have had an influence on the movement.
