Jongkind, Johan Barthold. (1819-1891). Canal and Windmill - Original Drawing, ca. 1880s.

Original drawing, pencil on paper, depicting a Dutch canal with a barge near a windmill. With the artist's stamped ink signature lower right. Unexamined out of frame but in apparently fine condition. Measures approx. 5.5 x 8 inches, total with frame approx. 12 x 14.5 inches. Provenance: David Grob Ltd (London) gallery label to frame verso.

For Manet, he was the father of modern landscape painting. Monet revered him as his guru and the only successful painter of water. Zola was amazed by his pictures and found him the most interesting person he knew, while Signac regarded him as a genius and the forerunner of Impressionism. The Dutch born Jongkind spent most of his life in France, but regularly returned to the Netherlands for inspiration. Especially to Rotterdam, for his city and harbour views as well as his coastal and river landscapes of ships. His French contemporaries admired his work and generally saw him as one of the pioneers of Impressionism.
