[Balanchine, George. (1904–1983)] Haggin, B.H.. "Music in the Nation" - EX-BALANCHINE. New York: William Sloane Associates. 1949. First edition.

Hardcover in dustjacket. 8vo. 376 pp. The copy of the great dancer/choreographer, George Balanchine, with his neatly penned ownership signature to the upper right corner of the first free endpage. We note the differences of the writing here from Balanchine's usual standard autograph and while this may just be a different form (this is the only ownership signature of his we've encountered), it's possible this signature was written on his behalf. Blue cloth somewhat worn, especially to corners, in a torn dustjacket, else in very good condition throughout.

An interesting association copy. Balanchine is discussed at length in several sections of the book - on pages 55, 237 and 317 - where, in the final of these, the author writes that "Balanchine, for me, stands out among choreographers - even among the best choreographers - in the way that Picasso stands out among even the best painters."
