Pinza, Ezio. (1892-1957). Signed Photograph in "Boris Godunov".
Vintage sepia doubleweight photograph of the great basso in the title role of Mussorgsky’s epic masterpiece, boldly signed with his name alone in blue ink.  In fine condition, mounting remnants to verso where dated July 3, 1949 in an unknown hand. 8 x 10 inches 20.5 x 25.5 cm.

In the final season of Chaliapin’s celebrated Boris performances at the Met (1929), the young Italian bass, Ezio Pinza, sang the role of the monk Pimen. Ten years later, Pinza would take the title role when Boris Godunov was revived for the first time since the Chaliapin years. Pinza, who naturally sang in Italian along with the rest of the cast, would remain the Met’s chief interpreter of the title role for the next decade, though he was briefly spelled by Ukrainian bass Alexander Kipnis in 1943.
