Lerner, Alan Jay. (1918–1986). "My career, which as you know began shortly after the Crimean War, has had its freckles of disaster" - Typed Letter Signed.

An amusing TLS from the great American librettist and lyricist.  To Benny Green in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire, England.  Dated London, July 23, 1981.  1 p.  Letterhead paper with Lerner's address of 21 Bramerton Street, London.  The letter is quite funny; in full: "Dear Benny, / Considering how formally you signed your letter, forgive my familiarity in addressing you by your first name. / You will be pleased to know that I have no mistaken identity stories to discard.  My great misfortune has been that all too often, the wrong people recognize me. / However, my career, which as you know began shortly after the Crimean War, has had its freckles of disaster.  I will try to pick out one or two grizzly ones and send them along before the prescribed date. / It as good to see you, albeit briefly, the other night in Chichester.  One of these nights we must have that dinner we've been talking about for the last several years."   10.5 x 7.25 inches (26.7 x 18.3 cm; both letters).  Horizontal folds; minor creases, else in fine condition.

Benny Green was a British writer who edited a posthumous collection of Lerner's lyrics in 1987.

"In the last years of his life, Lerner was living happily in London - in Bramerton Street, off the King's Road - with his eighth wife and sole widow, Liz Robertson.  He was urbane, witty, charming, had good aphorisms and a faintly distracting eye that had no sight due to a boyhood boxing injury."  Mark Steyn (steynonline.com)
