Bold signature to lower margin, with a small block of mounting remnant and stain just slightly touching the lower and upper edges. Photograph is 4.25 x 6.5 inches (10.8 x 15.5 cm) famed to an overall size of 9 x 11.5 inches (22.9 x 29 cm).
One of the leading violinists of his generation, Joachim made Berlin his home from 1865 to his death. There he taught at the Musical Academy in addition to his demanding schedule as a performer. Probably second only to Paganini among 19th-century virtuosi, he was the dedicatee of the Brahms concerto and many other works.
