Waller, Thomas "Fats." (1904-1943). Signed Postcard Photograph.
Dramatic original postcard photograph of the beloved jazz pianist shown at the keyboard, signed in green fountain pen ink over the image: "Fats Waller." Mounted to an autograph sheet with the signatures of Elsie and Doris Waters, AKA Gert & Daisy, on the verso. In fine condition. 3.5 x 5.3 inches (8.9 x 13.5 cm).
Born "Thomas Wright Waller," he was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer and comedic entertainer. A skilled pianist -- widely recognized as a master of stride piano -- Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. Waller was also a prolific songwriter, with many songs he wrote or co-wrote still known to modern audiences, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me". Fellow pianist and composer Oscar Levant dubbed Waller "the black Horowitz."
Florence Elsie Waters (1893–1990) and her sister Doris Ethel Waters (1899–1978) were English comic actresses and singers who performed as a double act. They are remembered for creating the comedy characters Gert and Daisy, and have been described as "the most successful female double-act in the history of British music hall and variety".
