Gropius, Walter. (1883–1969). Typed Letter Signed, sending Comments and Corrections for the article "Walter Gropius / Innovator". Typed letter signed from the influential German-American architect and founder of the Bauhaus School (1919), widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modernist architecture. A leading architect of the International Style, his important buildings include also the Harvard Graduate Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Pan Am Building in New York City. He was also the second husband of Alma Mahler. 1 page, on letterhead with his Cambridge, MA address. July 22, 1960. Addressed to Mr. Harlan Hoffa, Chairman of the Art Education Department of Boston University, noting his delight "about your essay which, besides its intellectual content, is remarkably correct as to the facts and data," ordering twenty copies when printed, and making "a few little remarks" as follows:
“On page 5 bottom: I think the names Oscar Schlemmer and Herbert Bayer should be added to the list of names.
Page 7 bottom: All the Bauchaus students had to get their journeyman's certificate before the public authorities of the Crafts Chamber, and in addition to make an exam in the Bauhaus to receive the Bauhaus certificate. (see page 8, top) instead of saying, "the student received a Master Builder's diploma", it should be "the student received a Master diploma". There were various branches of craft activity.
Page 9 top: The Bauhaus under Mies had to be move to Berlin for the last year and was closed there by the Nazi regime."
In fine condition.
