Stravinsky, Igor. (1882–1971) [Tansman, Alexandre. (1897–1986]. Signed Photograph to Alexander Tansman.
Signed small-format bust portrait photograph of the great composer and conductor, inscribed to Polish-born composer and pianist, Alexander Tansman, "To Alexander Tansman / Very Sincerely / ISTR / 1942." Somewhat irregularly trimmed, mounting remnants to verso, a few light scratches, else fine. 3.5 x 5 inches (92 x 125 mm).
Tansman lived in France in the 1920s and was in the circle of Stravinsky, Ravel, Milhaud and others. After the occupation of France, he fled to the US in 1941 and spent the years of the second world war in Hollywood. In 1948, he published "Igor Stravinsky: The Man and his Music," an extended tribute to his personal friend of that time and place, which was the first published biography of the composer. Shortly after the death of Stravinsky in 1971, he composed Stèle in memoriam Igor Stravinsky.
