But in the early 1790s he fell into a prolonged and intense obsession with Paradise Lost. Instigated in part by his friend William Hayley’s new biography of the poet, his intention seems to have been to produce a series of paintings, ‘three where Satan is the hero, and three of Adam and Eve’ (Romney to Hayley). But as was the case with so many of Romney’s ‘Historical’ subjects, none of these works came to fruition.
