Hess, Myra. (1890–1965) [Vandamm, Florence. (1883–1966)] [Bergh, Arthur. (1882–1962)] . Signed Photograph to her Recording Manager at Columbia Records.

Doubleweight photograph of the legendary English pianist in profile, seated at the piano, by the outstanding English photographer, ca. 1923.  Inscribed in black ink to the American composer, conductor, pianist and violinist Arthur Bergh, active in New York until about 1930, where he worked as a recording manager for the Emerson and, from 1923, Columbia companies:   "To Arthur Bergh / Thanking you for all / your patience! / Myra Hess."  Photographer's blindstamp, "Florence Vandamm / New York" to lower left corner and raised handstamp, "Photograph by / Florence Vandamm / New York City" to verso. 10 x 8 inches (25.5 x 20.3 cm).  In very fine condition, certainly among the best we've ever offered.

Florence Vandamm is best known for her portraiture for Broadway theater. During her five-decade career, Vandamm and her studio photographed over 2,000 productions. She was trained in painting at the Royal Academy of Arts in Londo, ran her own studio, and was elected a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain before moving to the United States in 1923.  She lived in New York where she was the official photographer for the Theatre Guild.  The present photograph was published by Vossische Zeitung in Berlin in 1924.  Hess apparently was fond of it and owned multiple prints: another print from the same negative, inscribed by Hess to Barbara Duncan, librarian of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, is kept at Eastman's Sibley Library.

In later life, Myra Hess professed not to like her own recordings (like many other artists, she detested the process). ‘They bore me to death,’ she said.
