Wieniawski, Henri. (1835–1880). "1050 times before breakfast and the same number after dinner" - Autograph Musical Quotation Signed.
Very rare AMQS from the Polish violinist and composer who has penned an elaborate entry with an autograph musical joke; in full, translated from the French: "This writing can be worth 1 franc and 30 centimes after the death of [his full autograph signature] Hri Wieniawski January 1859. / You wish that I write for you two lines, but as I am concerned that later generations will criticize me for some orthographic error, I prefer not to do anything of the sort." A line of music follows, exercises for the violin, with the caption, "1050 times before breakfast and the same number after dinner."  Originally contained in an album of signatures obtained in Birmingham, UK. 7.5 x 4.5 inches (19 x 11.5 cm). Left edge slightly uneven, lightly toned, overall fine. Together with a vintage sepia postcard portrait photograph.

This highly amusing AMQS is the first we've ever offered by Henri Wieniawski and they are indeed of legendary rarity. We have traced no examples of musical quotations in his hand appearing at auction in over 40 years of records.

The Polish virtuoso violinist, composer and pedagogue is regarded amongst the most distinguished violinists in history.  As a composer, he is responsible for some of the most important works in the violin repertoire, including two technically demanding violin concertos, the second of which (in D minor, 1862) is more often performed than the first (in F-sharp minor, 1853), the Op. 10 L'École moderne: 10 Études-caprices, the Polonaise Brillante, Op. 4, Scherzo-Tarantelle, Op. 16, and Légende, Op. 17, as well as several mazurkas for violin with piano accompaniment (including the popular Obertass in G major), using techniques such as left-hand pizzicato, harmonics, large leaps, and double stops.  Wieniawski was given a number of posthumous honors. His portrait appeared on a postage stamp of Poland in 1952 and again in 1957. A 100 zloty coin was issued in 1979 bearing his image. What is commonly called the "Russian bow hold" is sometimes called the "Wieniawski bow hold." The first violin competition named after Wieniawski took place in Warsaw in 1935, with Ginette Neveu taking first prize, David Oistrakh second, and Henri Temianka third. The International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition has been held every five years since 1952.
